I’m catching this one from Mexico on a late morning slot, and it’s the funding story Europe has been waiting to put on the scoreboard. Mistral AI just closed a €3 billion Series D led by Samsung Electronics, with the EU-backed Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) and existing investor PSG Equity as co-leads — pushing the Paris lab’s post-money valuation to more than €21 billion. That’s the lead on Euronews’ Sep 8 business brief, and Tech.eu plus Tech Funding News match the same round and valuation.
The step up is steep. Per Euronews, Mistral was valued at €11.7 billion after a €1.7 billion Series C led by Dutch chipmaker ASML in 2025 — so this round nearly doubles the company in about a year. Mistral says this is the largest equity fundraising ever completed by a European technology firm (Euronews / Tech Funding News). From Mexico, my read is simple: the headline isn’t just the cheque — it’s who wrote it, and what the money buys in concrete and silicon.
Who’s in the round — and what the capital buys
Tech.eu lists new money from Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, with returning names including a16z, ASML, Nvidia, Salesforce Ventures, and a long bench of European and U.S. funds. Tech Funding News notes this is also the Scaleup Europe Fund’s first investment since EQT became its manager. Use of funds, across all three outlets: expand AI research and training capacity, build computing infrastructure and products, and push commercial / international growth — on top of the ~€4 billion already committed to European data centres.

Sovereign AI means owning the racks
CEO Arthur Mensch told Euronews the long-term plan is to fully rely on capacity Mistral builds itself, with owned compute growing around 100% over the next five years, and bigger, faster models on the roadmap. The company is already spending on data centres across France and Europe — one facility running outside Paris, another under construction in Sweden — and raised further debt financing in March for the same purpose; Microsoft has agreed to fund capacity from its European network built around Nvidia chips. Both Microsoft and Nvidia are investors, with Nvidia adding exposure in this round (Euronews). Tech Funding News separately notes an $830 million debt facility in March 2026 tied to Nvidia GPUs.
On the customer side, Mistral says it supports more than 125 enterprises across 20 countries, with named logos including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC (Tech.eu / Tech Funding News). The pitch is open-weight frontier models plus infrastructure the company controls end to end — so banks and manufacturers can keep sensitive workflows out of a single U.S.-only stack. Euronews also carries the company’s projection that it will pass a billion dollars in annual recurring revenue by the end of 2026. From Mexico, I’m watching the compute line more than the valuation meme: Samsung, ASML, and Nvidia as suppliers and shareholders is Europe trying to own the stack, not just rent it.
